30 abril – 14h00 – Anfiteatro 1 (Campus Universitário da Penteada, P-2)


A Universidade da Madeira (UMa), através do Centro de Competência de Artes e Humanidades (CCAH), vai realizar no dia 30 de abril, entre as 14h00 e as 17h00, no Anfiteatro 1, piso-2 do Campus Universitário da Penteada, duas conferências no âmbito dos Estudos Linguísticos.

A sessão de abertura terá lugar às 14h00 e contará com a presença do Presidente do CCAH, Professor Doutor Paulo Miguel Rodrigues. Após a apresentação das instituições e do programa Erasmus, pelas 14h30, as Professoras Doutoras Monika Kopitowska (Universidade de Lodz, Polónia) e Gra?yna Anna Bednarek (Universidade de Bydgoszcz, Polónia) irão abordar os seguintes temas:
15:00: “Intercultural Pragmatics: Key Issues and Perspectives
16:00: “Polish and American Courtroom Discourse: Two Culturally-Varied and Socially-Conditioned Instantiations of Linguistic Genre

A moderação das conferências estará a cargo da Professora Doutora Alcina Sousa, docente de Linguística Inglesa. A conferência tem entrada livre e é dirigida à Academia e ao público em geral.

30 April – 14h00 – Amphitheatre 1 (University Campus of Penteada, P-2)
 

The University of Madeira (UMa) and the Arts and Humanities Centre (CCAH) will run on April 30, between 14.00 and 17.00, in Amphitheatre 1 (Floor -2), on the University Campus of Penteada, a conference on topics in Linguistics.

The opening session will take place at 14:00, run by the President of the Centre, Prof. Paulo Rodrigues, and chaired by Prof. Alcina Sousa. After the presentation of their institutions and the Erasmus Program at 14:30, Prof. Monika Kopitowska (University of Lodz, Poland) and Prof. Gra?yna Anna Bednarek (University of Bydgoszcz, Poland) will address the following topics in linguistics:

16:00: "Polish and American Courtroom Discourse: Two Culturally-Varied Genre and Linguistic Instantiations of Socially-Conditioned Instantiations of Linguistic Genre”

Monika Kopytowska ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) received her Ph.D. from the University of Lodz, Poland, where she is currently affiliated with the Department of Pragmatics. Her research interests revolve around identity, media discourse and the pragma-rhetorical aspects of the mass-mediated representation of conflict, ethnicity, and religion. She has published internationally in linguistic journals and volumes and is now working on the dynamics of proximization in news discourse. She is the co-editor of Lodz Papers in Pragmatics (de Gruyter), the associate editor of CADAAD Journal, and editorial board member of The University of Nairobi Journal of Language and Linguistics. Between October 2012 and February 2013 she has been visiting scholar at Lancaster University. She is a board member of the European Network for Intercultural Education Activities (ENIEDA).

Gra?yna Anna Bednarek is assistant professor at the Chair of Applied Linguistics, University of Economy in Bydgoszcz, Poland. She is an experienced sworn translator and certified court interpreter on the list of Ministry of Justice in Poland, expert member at the Polish Society of Sworn and Specialized Translators TEPIS (Warsaw, Poland), member of the International Language and Law Association (Los Angeles, USA), European Centre Natolin – the Forum for Justice and Internal Affairs (Warsa, Poland), and ENIEDA. Her research revolves around the English language of law, legal translation, discourse analysis with particular emphasis on specialized discourse and institutional talk, as well as theory of law, comparative law, criminal justice. Her monograph dedicated to courtroom discourse entitled: Polish vs. American courtroom discourse: inquisitorial and adversarial procedures of witness examination in criminal trials is currently being published by Palgrave Macmillan and will be available worldwide on 30 July 2014.
