In the Non Smoking Day, next Tuesday, November 17th, 18:30 pm, in the Forum FNAC in MadeiraShopping, will take place a conference with the theme "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Research, Prevention and Treatment." Simultaneously, at the entrance of FNAC, a screening by spirometry will take place, open to all interested public, to evaluate the airflow in the airways, as a way to raise awareness of the need for prevention and early diagnosis of this disease.
This initiative will be dealt with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, strongly associated with smoking, in the prospect of prevention and treatment. In the field of research, it will be presented the work of the Human Genetics Laboratory of the University of Madeira, whose results may have great importance in the prevention of this disease as well as assisting in the diagnosis and prognosis. Moreover, attention will be given to the new research project on the evaluation of the influence of genetic deficiency of alpha-1-antitrypsin, a glycoprotein that protects lung, on the susceptibility to the development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the Madeira population.
This initiative falls under the Protocol signed in December 2008 between the University of Madeira and MadeiraShopping.
